Margaret Corcoran was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1963. She lives and works in Dublin, where she also studied at The National College of Art & Design - including a study period at The Chelsea School of Art, London, England.
Margaret’s work is rooted in art and feminist histories, painted in a style marked by its restrained beauty, with occasional exuberant counterpoints. She works with history and mythology. Pushing the boundaries between past, present, personal and historical narratives, subjects such as identity, national identity, colonialism and post-colonialism are explored - often in a dream-like manner - in an art-historical and social context.
There’s a lightness of touch, a very appealing playfulness. When she veers towards abstraction with, say, expanses of saturated colour or flurries of calligraphic brushwork, it is beautifully judged. The historical material she is dealing with becomes a rich, nutritive mass from which she draws not new stories but –as ever- new versions of old stories.
