We Can Dance

Aileen Murphy | Sinéad Ní Mhaonaigh | Sarah O’Brien | Chanelle Walshe | Mollie Douthit | Susan Montgomery,

WE CAN DANCE is a group exhibition which brings together the paintings of six contemporary artists. Set in a purpose built studio amongst trees and expansive fields in West Cork, the exhibition offers an acknowledgment of the variety and wealth of painting being produced by these artists as well as the tangible and inviting experience of a studio exhibition space. Resting against raw materials and contained by wooden beams, cornered spaces, temporary walls and filtered light the exhibition install will be unfixed, fluid and likely to change.

WE CAN DANCE has been initiated in a spirit of celebration and support, featuring work by artists whose work embraces painting. For three of the artists West Cork is the place they call home, and for the other artists and
collaborators it is a place they are strongly attached to. The exhibition offers the artists an opportunity to strengthen their sense of connection and show with like minds in this familiar setting. Each participant has a unique approach to
painting: style and subject matter cover architectural space, everyday objects, real and imagined landscapes and pure abstraction.

The title of the exhibition references a fresh start, an optimistic outlook and physical movement in a time when the movement of humanity has been restricted like never before. By producing this exhibition the artists aim to address the importance of community, self-organization and experimenting with exhibition making.
The exhibition demonstrates the importance of equality and coming together amongst the six artists and invited collaborators (Jesse Jones and Sara O’Rourke). WE CAN DANCE aims to look beyond its own margins, to a greater territory of painting and to a potential for encounter and discourse around the future of exhibition making, inclusion and community.
